The Harry Potter Trivia Game: a WebQuest

For English as a foreign language in 4º E.S.O. / Bachillerato

designed by Deira Thul

Introduction.

How much do you know about Harry Potter? The phenomena created by J.K. Rowling is well extended all around the world: the Harry Potter books have been translated into a lot of languages, they have been adapted to three of the most famous fantasy films of all time and they even have won awards for promoting reading to children.

But are just the books and the films the causes of Harry Potter's success?

You will be able to answer that question by the end of this WebQuest, and your classmates will also become experts in the Harry Potter area thanks to your work.

You have been hired by an important toy enterprise to create a Harry Potter table game. You can design the rules of the game as you want, but it must be a trivia game. In order to create the game, you will work in pairs:

The private detective and the bookworm.

After you've designed the game, the enterprise has decided to test it by playing with a group of your classmates. If they don't have fun or don't end up knowing at least twice as they did about the Harry Potter world, your game won't be approved.

You need to do your best to create the best Harry Potter game, so read carefully through this WebQuest and complete your tasks!

Task.
FIRST PART: In pairs
You will create the game. In order to do that, you must research through the internet for information about the Harry Potter books, films, and any kind of news that might be useful. Then, you must produce the questions of the trivia game from the information you have collected and design the trivia cards and the board that will be used in the game.
SECOND PART: In groups of four
You will guide the game to two of your classmates. During the game you will write a list with the questions that your classmates guess. After the game, you will use the list to test your classmates and see if your game is valid.

Process.

FIRST PART: In pairs
1. Choose a partner and decide who is going to be assigned each role: the private detective and the bookworm.
2. Talk about what you already know about the topic that you have been assigned.
3. Use the "Resources" that have been selected for each role.
4. Follow the instructions and do the tasks for each of the roles.

You must read through the following information and write a report which holds the most interesting facts, in your opinion, about:

5. Using the information you have collected, you and your partner must extract as much questions as possible and write them down, with their corresponding answers, in a notebook.
6. Divide the questions in different categories according to their content: three categories the least, six categories the most. Discuss within your group the number and the names of the categories.
7. Elaborate a design for the trivia cards: you can use pictures from the internet or draw your own. Once designed, fill the trivial cards with one question from each category.
8. Create a design for the board and the counters of the game inspired by the scenery and the facts you've looked up. Build them using the materials available in school. Read through these links to find more useful information that can help you:

9. Think about the rules of the game and write them down in order to fill the players in.
10. Don't forget to read the Evaluation to know how your work will be evaluated.

SECOND PART: In groups of four
1. Pick two students from out of your group.
2. Explain them the rules of the game you have designed and answer any question they have.
3. Divide yourselves in order to guide one of your classmates each during the game.
4. Write down every answer your player guesses and every answer he/she doesn't.
5. Once the game is finished, elaborate a quiz about Harry Potter and make the players do it. You can use some of the questions you wrote in the trivia cards.
6. Check the test out and see how much about the Harry Potter world have the players learned. Draw a diagram graphic which shows the difference between the information the players had before and after the game.

Evaluation.
Your role tasks will be evaluated individually by your teacher according to:
— Gramatical and spelling correctness
— Visual presentation
— Content

The whole game will be evaluated in group by your teacher, who will witness the first play with the two students from out of your group, and will check out:
— Coherence and correctness of the rules
— Gramatical and spelling correctness in the trivia cards and the quiz
— Care taken in the visual presentation of the board and the design of the cards

Conclusion.

You learnt a lot about the Harry Potter universe and introduced your classmates into it. If you haven't read the books yet, that would be a good idea for this summer.

You also learnt about the fan phenomena this saga has generated. You could have a good time imagining and writing some fanfiction about Harry Potter.

Finally, you learnt about J.K. Rowling and the work that has been made in the movies. You can have real fun by surfing her website or by watching the movies.

You just created a whole new trivia game. Try and build more about subjects that may interest you!
